PEO FAQs
Learn the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions below.
PEO stands for Precinct Election Official, informally known as “Poll Workers.” PEOs conduct assigned duties at polling locations before and on Election Day.
You can sign up to be a PEO by filling out an application online (click here for link: electionlink.votehamiltoncountyohio.gov/TED/ElectionForcePortal/JobApplication.aspx) on our website or calling our PEO Department at (513) 946-8541) or (513) 946-8542 and speaking with a staff member.
To work as a PEO, you must:
- Be a registered Hamilton County voter.
- Speak, read, and write fluently in the English language.
- Have reliable transportation.
- Attend a training session.
- Be willing to work approximately 15 hours on Election Day.
- Not be a convicted felon.
Please allow four weeks after the Election for payroll to be processed and checks to be sent in the mail. You will only be paid for training and other duties if you work the entirety of Election Day (exceptions may apply if previously arranged with PEO supervisor).
The Board of Elections requires each PEO to receive training prior to each election. Training classes are available in person at our Board office during the week, weeknights, and weekends. All PEOs must pass a quiz at the end of their training to work the polls. It is highly recommended that new PEOs review our training material online before attending their training class. Online training review can be found at this link: votehamiltoncountyohio.gov/become-poll-worker/poll-training/app/#/
During training and Monday night setup you can wear anything you are most comfortable in (except attire prohibited inside a Campaign Neutral Zone). On Election Day we suggest dressing business casual. PEOs should never display or wear any political attire while both attending training and working the polls. Attire prohibited includes the name of a party or candidate on the ballot, and attire in support of, or in opposition to, a ballot question or issue.
Yes, you must work all day on Election Day from 5:30 a.m. until the polls are closed and you are released from your location by your manager (approximately 8:30 p.m.). We currently do not offer split shifts on Election Day.
Our PEO Supervisors will staff you at one of our polling locations within Hamilton County. You could be staffed 15-20 minutes from your home. PEOs are required to have reliable transportation to and from training, and to and from your assigned polling location, to work. It is your responsibility to get reliable transportation.
PEOs who worked in the most recent election are among the first people to be contacted by the Board to work the next election. It is recommended to reach out to our PEO Department 3 months before the next election and tell us of your interest in working the election.
If you are interested in working as a Voting Location Manager or a Voting Location Deputy, please reach out to our PEO Supervisors Jason (513) 946-8541 or Hayley (513) 946-8542) and inform them of your interest.
Training Materials
Please find PDF versions of several training manuals attached below. We strongly encourage all new PEOs to review these materials prior to attending their training class, as it will help you become more familiar with key definitions and equipment. Additionally, be sure to check out our VLM Handbook for an in-depth understanding of the responsibilities of a Manager. The training manuals contain information relevant to the May 2025 Primary/Special Election.
