Board of Elections Prepares for First County-Wide Election Under New Photo ID Law; Need for Poll Workers is Especially High

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio - There will be a Special Election on August 8th, 2023 with Early Voting beginning on Tuesday, July 11th. This will be the first county-wide election in Hamilton County under Ohio’s new Photo ID law. Registered voters in Hamilton County will receive a post card in the mail, with important information from the BOE and details about Ohio Election Law new ID requirements. There is still time to register to vote or to update a change of name or address for the August 8th, 2023, Special Election. The deadline to register or update is today, Monday July 10, 2023. The Board of Elections will be open until 9:00PM this evening to receive paper registration forms. Voters can also register or update their address online until 11:59PM. Check your registration status on our website, register or update your registration online, or appear in person at the Board of Elections office, public library, or BMV.

There are three ways to cast your ballot in the August 8th Special Election:

1. Voters may submit an application for a Vote by Mail ballot now. Ballots will be mailed beginning July 11th. Applications may be downloaded from our website or requested by calling the Board of Elections at 513-632-7000. The deadline to apply is August 1st - the BOE will be open that day until 8:30pm

2. Early In-Person Voting, at the Board of Elections, begins on Tuesday, July 11th. A complete listing of early voting days/hours is attached and available on our website.

3. Election Day Voting will take place from 6:30am – 7:30pm on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023. You can find your polling location on our website.

Please note: There have been some changes in polling locations for the upcoming election. The post card mailer you receive from the BOE will include your correct polling location for this election.

ACCEPTABLE ID FOR VOTING CHANGES: There have been several changes to Ohio Election Law that will be in effect for the August 8th Special Election. Key changes include:

To vote Early In-Person or on Election Day, a voter must present ONE of the following (cannot be expired):

o Ohio driver’s license or state ID card, or interim ID form issued by the Ohio  BMV
o US passport or passport card
o US military ID card, Ohio National Guard ID card, or US Department of Veterans Affairs ID card

Documents no longer accepted as ID to vote:   utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, concealed carry permit, or other government documents with current address
o In-person voters who do not provide a valid ID will be able to vote provisionally

To Vote by Mail, a voter must submit ONE of the following (cannot be expired) along with a Vote by Mail Application:
o Ohio Driver’s License or Ohio ID number
o Last four digits of the voter’s social security number
o Copy of Photo ID (must include both front & back)
