Registering to vote or updating your address for voting is easy – you can go online, print a form and mail it in, or go in person to any public library or Ohio BMV.

How to Register

You can register to vote, change your address, and/or change your name by any of the following; click on each below to learn more:

Complete your registration online, at the Secretary of State’s website: voteohio.gov

Identification Required

You must provide your Ohio driver’s license OR Ohio state identification card number (contains two letters and six digits), AND the last four digits of your Social Security number.

If you do not have a valid Ohio driver’s license or Ohio state identification card you must register by U.S. mail or in person (see below).

Have a voter registration form mailed to you by calling the Hamilton County Board of Elections at 513-632-7000.

Identification Required

If you have a current valid Ohio driver’s license or Ohio state identification card, you must provide that number (# contains two letters and six digits).

If you do not have either of those identification numbers, you must provide the last four digits of your Social Security number.

 

Visit one of the following locations in person to get a voter registration form and register.

  • The Hamilton County Board of Elections, 4700 Smith Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45212
  • The office of the registrar or any deputy registrar of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
  • Public libraries
  • Public high schools or vocational schools
  • County treasurer’s offices
  • The office of the Secretary of State
  • The office of any of the 88 county boards of elections
  • Offices of designated agencies, including:
    • The Department of Job and Family Services;
    • The Department of Health (including the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program);
    • The Department of Mental Health;
    • The Department of Developmental Disabilities;
    • Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities; or
    • The office of any state-assisted college or university responsible for providing assistance to disabled students

You may entrust your completed registration application to another person for delivery to elections officials. However, that person must deliver your form to a county board of elections or the Secretary of State’s office within 10 days after completion, or by the voter registration deadline, whichever is earlier.

Deadline for all voter registration options is 30 days prior to Election Day

Your Voter Registration and Update Information Form must be postmarked by the voter registration deadline, the 30th day before the election, to be eligible to vote in that election. If you register in person or online, you must do so by the 30th day before the election. You, or another person acting on your behalf, also may deliver your application to one of the offices listed under “Register in Person”.

A properly completed registration form must have your name, birth date, current address, qualified form of identification, your signature, and answer questions 1 (U.S. citizen) and 2 (age 18 by next general election).

What are the qualifications to register and vote in Ohio?

If you meet all the following requirements, you are qualified to register to vote in Ohio:

  1. You are a citizen of the United States
  2. You will be at least 18 years old on or before the day of the next general election
  3. You will be a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days immediately before the election in which you want to vote
  4. You are not incarcerated (in prison or jail) for a felony conviction
  5. You have not been declared incompetent for voting purposes by a probate court
  6. You have not been permanently disenfranchised for violating the election laws

You are eligible to vote in elections held in your voting precinct 30 days after you are duly registered to vote in this state. We will mail you a notice of your voting location. If you do not receive a timely notice, please contact us.
