Hamilton County Needs Poll Workers for Special August Election

Hamilton County, OH – With a state-wide election, scheduled for August 8th, the Hamilton County Board of Elections has an unusually high need for poll workers. Election poll workers, also known as Precinct Election Officials or PEOs, work at the polling place on Election Day and are critical to the election process. Join the team and help Hamilton County vote.

“It takes support from our voters to help facilitate elections in Hamilton County,” says Director Sherry Poland. “It takes approximately 2,400 people to fully staff a county-wide election.”

“Poll workers play a vital role in our democracy by helping their neighbors vote,” adds Deputy Director Alex Linser. “Sign up today to help deliver fair and free elections in your community.”

On Election Day, PEOs give ballots to registered voters, explain how to mark the ballot, monitor the voting equipment, and complete required forms. Additionally, they set up equipment, open the polls, take down equipment, instruct voters about procedures at the polling place, and close the polls.

The entire election process is a bipartisan effort. There are three PEO roles on election day. Voting Location Manager (VLM) and Voting Location Deputy (VLD) manage responsibilities and procedures at the polling place and are of opposite parties. Precinct Election Officials (PEOs) participate in all activities at the Monday night set-up and on Election Day.

PEOs must attend a training class, which are offered mornings, afternoons, and evenings at the Board of Elections in Norwood. In addition to the four-hour class, PEOs setup their polling place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday night August 7, and work Election Day on Tuesday, August 8, from 5:30 a.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. PEOs earn $181.50+ for their services as a poll worker. Training sessions begin July 10.

To be a PEO, you must:

  • Be a registered voter in Hamilton County, Ohio
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be able to speak, read and write fluently in the English language
  • Be comfortable using electronic technology
  • NOT be a candidate for any office to be voted on at the polling place in that election
